How it works
A nutrition app that does the counting for you
A classic calorie counter asks you to find the food in a list, guess the portion size and type everything in by hand. At three meals a day that is fifteen minutes of admin — and the main reason most food diaries are abandoned in the second week.
Plately turns that around. You photograph the plate, and the app recognises the ingredients and breaks the meal down into calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat. One analysis takes about four seconds, and the whole diary is built with a tool you already carry in your pocket.
On top of that comes hydration tracking with a goal calculated from your body weight, and a weight chart that shows the trend rather than a single measurement. All of it in one browser tab — on your phone, tablet and computer, with no separate app to install on each device.
Capabilities
Calm instead of counting
Four pillars behind using Plately every day.
A photo, not a spreadsheet
Snap your plate and Plately recognises the ingredients, splitting the meal into calories, protein, carbs and fat.
Hydration in the background
Glass, bottle, shaker — one tap. Your goal is calculated from your body weight, not a generic rule.
A coach that knows you
Sleep, stress, activity level, diet and obstacles — your coach builds a plan around your context.
Your data stays yours
Google sign-in and database-level protection: nobody but you can read your log. You can also connect your own API key.
I've hit too little protein three days in a row.
Add 40 g of protein at dinner — cottage cheese or eggs. In your deficit that protects muscle mass.
Inside the app
Four tabs, one diary
Plately opens on the day view. The calorie ring shows how much of your daily target you have eaten and how much is left until the evening, and beside it three macronutrient bars — protein, carbohydrates and fat — each with its current value and its limit, so a shortfall is visible immediately. On the right sits the hydration counter, with a goal calculated from your body weight and one-tap buttons for a glass, a bottle and a shaker. Below runs the list of meals logged that day, with calories and macros on every entry.
The progress tab collects what a single day cannot show: current weight, total lost so far and the distance left to your target. The calorie history chart plots seven or thirty days against the goal line, and the weight chart smooths daily fluctuation, so you read a trend rather than one arbitrary morning. Every measurement is saved with its date and stays in the history.
The AI coach reads your diary and builds the day's plan out of it: what to eat in the evening to close the protein gap, when to stop adding carbohydrates, how much is still left to drink. You can also simply ask it a question. The last tab is your profile — level, points, day streak, badges and a friends leaderboard. That part usually decides whether a food diary survives longer than two weeks.
Day view
Calories, macros, hydration and the meals of the day on one screen. The streak keeps the rhythm.
Progress
Weight, distance to target and calorie history over seven or thirty days.
AI coach
A plan for today built from your own diary, with a list of nutrient-dense foods.
Profile
Level, badges and a friends leaderboard — the reason to come back tomorrow.
More than a counter
What else is inside
The things you do not see on the first screen, and that make the difference in week three — when most food diaries end.
Barcode scanner
Point at the code on the packaging and the nutrition facts come from the Open Food Facts database. Always with a confirmation step, because an entry there can be out of date.
Food library
Everything you log once comes back with one tap from the “Quick” tab — no photo, no AI request and nothing taken off your daily limit.
Offline logging
A meal logged on the metro or on a plane waits in a queue and is sent when the signal returns. It lands on the day it was eaten, not the day it was delivered.
Sleep and sleep window
A sleep diary with lights-out and wake-up times, cycle planning around tomorrow’s alarm, and a behavioural sleep-window programme adjusted weekly.
Steps, heart rate, sleep
You copy the numbers from your watch by hand; Plately calculates net calories burned with the MET model and describes the day in one AI report a day.
Levels, badges, friends
Day streak, level and XP, a badge showcase, daily challenges and a friends leaderboard. Strangers see only a nickname and whatever you switch on yourself.
Installs like an app
On Android, Windows, macOS and Linux the browser offers to install it; on iPhone it is “Add to Home Screen”. An icon, its own window, and it opens without signal.
Export and account deletion
A full JSON plus CSV files of meals and weight, one click in settings. Deleting the account removes everything, the account included — without writing to anyone.
Getting started
Your first meal in three steps
From opening the app to the first entry in your diary usually takes less than two minutes.
-
Sign in with Google
Open the app and choose Google sign-in. There is no registration form and no password to invent, and the Start plan asks for no payment card.
-
Photograph your meal
Tap Add meal and take a picture of the plate. Plately recognises the ingredients and, in about four seconds, writes calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat into the diary.
-
Add water and weight
Fluids go in with one tap and the morning weigh-in with a single entry. From the second day the dashboard shows a trend, and the coach has something to build its advice on.
The same diary opens later on your phone, tablet and computer — just sign in with the same account.
Who Plately is for
Four situations where keeping a diary starts to pay off.
Losing weight
You see the deficit as a number instead of guessing at it. The weight chart smooths out daily swings, so you judge the trend rather than one random morning.
Building muscle
Protein is the macro people miss most often. Plately shows it separately for every meal, so you spot the shortfall the same day instead of a week later.
A diary for your dietitian
Instead of reconstructing a whole week from memory at the appointment, you have the meals, macros and hydration on record. You can export the data at any time.
Getting the habit to stick
If classic trackers have already defeated you, the problem was rarely motivation — it was the number of taps. A photo instead of a form removes that barrier.

What’s next
What is not there yet — and why
We would rather say plainly what you will not find in Plately yet than leave a switch in settings that does nothing. The statuses below are current as of the day this page was published.
-
Soon
AI Cooking Teacher
Point the camera at the counter and cook along with the AI, out loud, in real time. The code is written, but the feature is switched off for everyone until it works reliably. It will be a separate service, not part of any plan.
-
Planned
Google Play and App Store
Today you install Plately from the browser as a PWA and it works the same on every system. Store listings are planned; the browser install stays, because it is the one that bypasses every store and every commission.
-
Not yet
Reminders and notifications
A browser cannot schedule a notification without a push server — a reminder would only fire while the tab is open. Rather than a switch that will not ring, there is none. They return together with Web Push.
-
Not yet
Automatic watch sync
The browser has no access to Health Connect, Apple Health or Huawei Health. Steps, heart rate and sleep are entered by hand — the same numbers you already see in your watch app. Sync returns with the store version.
-
Planned
Dietitian panel: photos, comments, PDF
A practice can already see a patient’s diary, macros and hydration and set their targets remotely. Meal photos in the panel, comments on a day, PDF export and staff accounts come in later versions.
-
Planned
Card payments and euro invoices
Plans and gift cards are paid today in cryptocurrency through NOWPayments, and billing is in US dollars. Card payments, regional pricing and euro invoices for practices are planned.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
The short version of how Plately works, what it costs and what happens to your data.
What is Plately?
Plately is a nutrition app that runs in your browser. You take a photo of your meal and the app recognises the ingredients and converts them into calories and macros: protein, carbohydrates and fat. Beyond the food diary it also tracks hydration and body weight.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Plately runs in the browser on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux. Open app.plately.eu, sign in with your Google account, and the same diary is there on your phone and on your computer.
How does counting calories from a photo work?
You photograph the plate, and Plately recognises the ingredients and breaks the meal down into calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat. Analysing a single photo takes about four seconds.
Is Plately free?
Yes. The Start plan costs 0 USD and needs no payment card and no commitment. It includes 4 meal analyses per day, 2 coach messages per day, 1 daily AI activity report, and unlimited hydration and weight tracking. AI answers arrive after about 20 seconds of waiting. None of the plans carry ads.
What do the paid plans cost?
Premium is $6.99 a month or $59 a year: 8 meal analyses, 6 coach messages and 4 AI activity reports a day, answers with no queue, a custom accent colour, and a reserved share of the AI pool. Ultra is $12.99 a month or $119 a year: 16 analyses, 18 coach messages and 8 reports a day. Every plan uses the same model — the paid ones give you more answers and no waiting, not more accurate ones. You can change plan in your account settings.
What is the coach in Plately?
It is an assistant that builds its advice from your context: sleep, stress level, activity, diet and any obstacles you report. It refers to what you actually recorded in your diary rather than handing out general rules.
How is the hydration goal calculated?
Your daily goal is derived from your body weight rather than a generic rule such as eight glasses a day. You log what you drink with a single tap: a glass is 250 ml, a bottle 500 ml and a shaker 750 ml.
What happens to my data?
You sign in with a Google account, and your diary is protected at the database level — nobody but you can read it. Plately carries no ads and no third-party trackers, and you can export or delete your data at any time.
Which languages does Plately support?
The interface is available in twelve languages: Polish, English, German, Ukrainian, Russian, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese and Korean.
Can I connect my own API key?
Yes. Instead of using the limits of your plan you can connect your own API key in the settings.
Does Plately sync with a watch?
No. Activity figures — steps, heart rate and sleep — are typed in by hand, on every plan. Plately runs in the browser, and the browser has no access to Health Connect, Apple Health or Huawei Health. The plans differ only in how many times a day the AI will write about those figures.
